NEW DELHI: Mystery shrouds the
death of an inmate whose body was found in east Delhi’s Mandoli jail complex three days ago. An inquest proceeding was initiated by Delhi Police to investigate the cause of the death.
Police said that the inmate Akash Lal was lodged in jail number 11 of the jail complex.
Lal’s body was found hanging by a gamcha from a hook in the washroom by other inmates at 7am on Sunday.
The jail authorities were informed and the body was taken to the hospital in the complex where doctors declared him brought dead. His body was later shifted to the mortuary and handed over to the family members following an autopsy. No suicide note was recovered.
Investigation revealed that the inmate was an undertrial prisoner and had recently been shifted to the jail. He was a resident of Shakha village in Uttar Pradesh.
Police said that no other injury marks were found on Lal’s body except ligature marks around the neck from the hanging. The duty magistrate has also been informed, who has also ordered a probe into the incident.
The cops are checking the CCTV footage inside the jail complex to ascertain the exact sequence of events. A team of forensic experts also examined the spot.
Police teams are also speaking to the family of the victim to check if he had mentioned any ill treatment or fight with other inmates to them.
Tihar Jail officials were unavailable for comments despite repeated attempts. Mandoli jail complex comes under Tihar Jail.
Mandoli jail was recently in the spotlight when some of the inmates were found making videos on their mobile phones and cooking food on induction cookers.
